1) Exploring the city of Ermoupolis

Our tour in the town of Ermoupolis begins with a visit to see the painting of “El Greco”, a treasure found in the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. Walking through the traditional roads of the island, we visit the Town Hall of the Municipality, erected by the architect Ernest Chiller & the Archaeological Museum. The Catholic Monastery and the Church of the Annunciation is next on the agenda. Moving through the old mansions, we arrive at the church of Saint Nicholas. During the diocese of Francesco the Archbishop of Syros and the South Aegean Sea, the “Vatican” gave part of the holy relics of Saint Nicholas of Bari to the church of Saint Nicholas of Syros, thanks to the Polish Pope John Paul II.

Through the neighbourhood of “Vaporia”, we move on to Miaoulis Square, one of the oldest and largest in Greece, to visit the Municipal Theatre of Ermoupolis “Apollon”, built in 1864 by the French architect Piotr Chabeau. It is a small scale copy of “La Scala di Milano”, built with white marble and limestone in three levels. It houses a lot of beautiful murals and it has been renovated using specific materials in order for the visitors to enjoy perfect acoustics. It was the first opera in Greece. A lot of Italian operas were presented there until 1944. At that time, the building was almost completely destroyed by the German troops. During the period of 1970 – 1980 it was restored. Today the Municipal Theatre “Apollon” houses some of the most important events and festivals in the world.
